Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission. (CCC)
In the Catholic Church the there are two paths to baptism: one for the newborns and children under 7, and one for those who are 7 or older and, therefore, old enough to speak for themselves.
If you are in the first group:
Congratulations on the birth of your child! We look forward to the day of his or her baptism.
In order to help prepare for the celebration we offer a preparation session for parents. Godparents are always welcome.
Each child to be baptized should have one godfather or one godmother, or one of each.The primary role of the godparent is to provide an example of living faith to the child as they grow up in the church. For this reason, Godparents must:
- be at least 16 years old,
- have received baptism, confirmation, and first communion,
- be living a life consonant with the role they are undertaking.
Non-Catholic Christians can participate as a Christian Witness.
If you are an adult or your child is at least 7 years old, we offer what parishes often call the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, or R.C.I.A. The journey to initiation in the Church is a uniquely personal one. If you are thinking you might be interested in becoming Catholic, let’s start the conversation.
